This morning on Radio 4’s Today programme, experts were debating how to “fix” the rise in workplace sickness and the billions lost each year through people being too unwell to work. It’s a vital conversation, but this is the wrong question to ask...

Instead of asking how we fix it, we should be asking how we prevent it...

I know from personal experience that behind every statistic is a person who once turned up every day, until they couldn’t anymore. Often, it’s not sudden illness, it’s slow disconnection. Feeling unseen. Feeling isolated and like their effort no longer matters, their voice goes unheard.

When organisations invest in coaching, they invest in human connection. Coaching makes people feel truly valued, truly heard, and truly part of the whole. An organisation that genuinely cares rather than just saying it does, by box ticking, builds resilience from the inside out... the kind that no wellbeing poster or policy can fake.

A culture that looks after its people won’t need to ask how to “fix” sickness.
It will already be preventing it by valuing humans first.
